• In [DPM Administrator Console], click [Protection] on the navigation bar.

  • In the [Actions] pane, click [Create protection group]. The [Create New Protection Group Wizard] appears.

  • Review the [Welcome to the New Protection group Wizard] page, and then click [Next].

Note: If you do not want the wizard to display the [Welcome] page when you create protection groups in the future, select [Do not show this Welcome page again].

  • On the [Select Group Members] page, verify that all computers that store data you want to protect are displayed in the [Available members] box.
  • In the [Available members] box, expand the server nodes to display the available data sources on each server.

Note: If you have just installed the protection agent, you might experience a delay of up to several minutes before you can expand the node for the server and display its available data sources.

  • Place a check mark in the box next to each data source that you want to include in the protection group. As you select data sources, your selections appear in the [Selected members] box.

  • To view a list of “excluded folders”, click the [View] link next to [Excluded folders]. To exclude a folder, expand the directory structure, and then clear the check box of the folder you want to exclude.
    To “exclude file types”, click the [Exclude File] link, and in the [Exclude File Types] dialog box, type the file types you want to exclude, and then click [OK].
  • After you have selected the members for the protection group, click [Next].
  • On the [Select Data Protection Method] page, in the [Protection group name] box, type a new name for the protection group as per the Practical Action guidance. Currently, following Protection Group names have been suggested to use in the DPM servers.
  • In the Protection policy section, [select your protection method]:
    • [I want short-term protection using]. Select this [check box] for short-term protection and then select the [Disk] as your media.
    • [I want long-term protection using tape]. Select this [check box] for long-term protection.

  • On the [Select Data Protection Method] page, click [Next].

  • On the [Specify Short-Term Goals] page, in the [Retention range] box, select the duration of time as [7 Days]. (This value can be revised at any time)
    In the [Synchronization frequency] section, select [Every 1 Hour]

  • Recovery points for files – In the [File recovery points] box, click [Modify] to change the recovery point schedule to run at [18.00 Everyday].

  • Application recovery points – When there are no Applications backups selected, this schedule will be based on the [Express Full Backup] schedule.
    Express full backup – In the [Application recovery points] box, click [Modify] to change the express full backup schedule to run at [21.00 Everyday].

  • On the [Specify Short-Term Goals] page, click [Next].

  • On the [Review Disk Allocation] page, review the space allocations that DPM recommends for the protection group. DPM lists the disk spaced that is allocated for your protection group based on the size of the selected data.

Note: Accept the default space allocations unless you are certain that they do not meet your needs.

  • On the [Review Disk Allocation] page, click [Next].

  • On the [Specify Long-Term Goals] page, in the [Recovery Goals] box, select the [Retention range] as [1 Week].
    Furthermore, set the [Frequency of backup] to [Daily] as well.

  • In the [Backup schedule] box, click [Modify] to change the recovery point schedule to run at [03.00 AM Daily]. Then click [Next],

  • On the [Select Library and Tape Details] page, in the [Library details] box, configure the [Library] & [Copy Library] to [USB Media Changer]. Keep the original value of the [Drives allocated] [1] unchanged.

  • In the [Tape options for long-term protection] box, select [Compress data], then select [Next],
  • On the [Choose Replica Creation Method] page, select [Automatically] / [Now] to run the initial replica of the protected data.

Note: Replica creation involves copying all the data selected for protection to the DPM server and then running synchronization with consistency check for each of the replicas.
Alternatively, you can select [Manually] option to use tape, USB storage, or other portable media to transfer the baseline data to the DPM server.

  • On the [Summary] page, review the tasks that DPM is set to perform to create the protection group and then click [Create Group].

  • When the creation process is complete, DPM displays a confirmation page where you can view the results of creating the protection group task. Click [Close] to exit from the wizard.
