Fundamental rule is that you must use a single license for each computer protected by the DPM.

There are three type of Agent licenses available in DPM.

  • Client Agent License: This applies per protected client computer basis. This License entitles you to protect data in the client computers operated with Windows XP & Windows Vista OS.
  • Standard Agent License: This applies per protected server basis. This License entitles you to protect volumes, shares, and folders, as well as computer system state.

  • Enterprise Agent License: This applies per protected server basis. This License entitles you to protect application data, such as mailboxes and databases on an Exchange Server, SharePoint, etc in addition to files.

Note: if you’re in a cluster environment, you must install an agents on each node of the cluster. A license is used for each server node.

The following table illustrate what license will be used in most common services & Data scenarios,

Type of protected Services / Data License type
Files onlyFiles on a single node of a server cluster Standard
System state Standard
SQL Server Enterprise
Exchange Server Enterprise
Windows SharePoint ServicesIf the SharePoint portals are running using a front-end Web server & a back-end server, two licenses should be used to run the DPM Agent. Enterprise
Virtual Server / Hyper V Enterprise
Additional DPM Server (In DR networks) Enterprise
Data for bare metal recovery using DPM System Recovery Tool Enterprise
Windows XP / Windows Vista based Data Client

Note: On a server running Virtual Server / Hyper V, a single protection agent installed on the server enables you to protect any number of virtual machines, or guests, on the host Virtual Server. To protect specific application data within a virtual machine, such as to protect the databases for an instance of SQL Server running on a virtual machine, you must install a protection agent directly to the virtual machine. Instead you can install System Center Server Management Suite Enterprise licenses on the Virtual Host server, that would cover all your licensing need in a single Virtual Host.
